Is Parque Cascadas Suitable for Families Visiting Patagonia?
Updated: Oct 20

PARQUE CASCADAS
Quick answer
Yes. Parque Cascadas is a private lodge on the Río Simpson, near Coyhaique, in Chile's Patagonia Aysén, and families are some of the guests who enjoy it most. Children have open lawns to run on, a private river beach, forest trails and a small playhouse, and when they are ready for more, there is fly fishing and horseback riding. We can also arrange babysitting, so parents get an evening of their own. It is 90 minutes from Balmaceda airport. This is real nature, so little ones need a watchful eye near the river, the hot tub and the wood-burning stoves.
A private place, not a family resort
Parque Cascadas is suitable for families visiting Patagonia, especially for those who want space, nature, privacy and a slower way of traveling with children.
This is not a hotel with a kids' club or a highly programmed family resort. It is a private lodge in Patagonia Aysén where families can experience nature together: walking, fishing, resting, playing, cooking, exploring and returning each evening to a house that feels warm and personal.
For many families, that is precisely the value.
We have welcomed families with babies, toddlers and older children. Some come for slow days by the river and short walks. Others arrive with children ready for fly fishing, floating, horseback riding, easy hikes or outdoor exploration. We have seen babies carried on walks through the park, children fishing for the first time, families sharing a Patagonian barbecue and long afternoons that move between the river, the garden, the fire and the table.
That is the kind of family travel we believe in.
What children can do at Parque Cascadas
Children have room to move here. There are wide areas of grass to walk, run and play, a private river beach, forest surroundings, board games for family evenings, construction games for younger children and a small playhouse that has become one of the favorite corners for the little ones.
The experience can be very gentle or more adventurous, depending on the age and rhythm of each family.
Age | Well suited for |
Babies and toddlers (0–3) | Carrier walks through the park, time on the lawns, the river beach with a parent, the playhouse. |
Children 4–8 | The walk to Cascada La Virgen ( 30 -60 minutes, easy), floating (from age 3), river beach, playhouse, birdwatching, board and construction games, a first fishing lesson. |
Children 9 and older | Fly fishing on the Río Simpson, horseback riding (from age 9 ), easy hikes and guided excursions. |
Families can build each day according to energy. A morning walk to Cascada La Virgen. A quiet lunch at the house. An afternoon at the river beach. A board game by the fire. A fishing lesson. A horseback ride. Or simply a day of doing very little, which is sometimes exactly what families need.
It is not about rushing from one attraction to another, but about creating memories in a place where children can feel Patagonia directly: the sound of the Río Simpson, the texture of moss, the cold air in the morning, the horses, the birds, the fire, the open sky, the pleasure of being outside without a fixed schedule.
Lodge or Cottage: which is better for your family?
Parque Cascadas has two houses on the same property.
The Lodge sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms. It is the best choice for larger families, multigenerational trips or two families traveling together.
The Cottage sleeps up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms. It works beautifully for smaller families looking for a more intimate riverside stay.
Grandparents, parents, children and friends can share the property while still having space to rest. Cribs, high chairs and children's life jackets are available on request.
Babysitting and extra help for parents
Traveling with children is easier when the place allows flexibility. Some adults may want to enjoy the hot tub while the children are sleeping, or share a longer Patagonian barbecue in the galpón, our barbecue barn, without leaving the little ones unattended.
For those moments, we can help arrange additional support, such as babysitting or extra help, with advance notice and subject to availability. That small detail can completely change the experience for parents.
What families should know before coming
Parque Cascadas is in a natural environment, and there are things to consider:
• Children need supervision near the river, trails, hot tub, fire areas and outdoor
spaces.
• The houses have wood-burning stoves that are not protected by child barriers, so
extra care is needed with younger children.
• Weather changes quickly in Patagonia and surfaces can be slippery.
• This is a remote area. Families with babies should bring what their baby needs for
the full stay.
• The best months for families are october to may, when days are longer and warmer.
For the right family, this is part of the experience. Parque Cascadas is for families who want their children to encounter nature, not only observe it from a distance. It is for parents who want comfort, but not artificiality. It is for groups who value privacy, space, warmth and the kind of days that become stories years later.
How long should a family stay?
We recommend at least three nights. Five nights allow a better balance between rest, nature, excursions and slow time at the property.
A family stay here is not about filling every hour. It is about having the space to be together.
To walk.
To fish.
To play.
To rest.
To sit by the fire.
To let Patagonia enter the memory of the family slowly and deeply.
